Great Places to Eat on the Outer Cape-Wellfleet, Truro, Provincetown, Eastham and Orleans.

The Outer Cape has some truly good places to eat. You can have your fill of lobsters, steamers, fried fish galore or you can eat at nicer sit-down restaurants. Here is our list of favorites.

Arnold’s, Eastham-by far our favorite place in the summer. First, this place is perfect for families. The prices are relatively reasonable, the atmosphere is casual and the food is excellent. They offer fantastic fried food. We love the clams, shrimp and fish. They have steamed lobsters or a "clambake" special that includes steamers and chowder. They have lobster rolls (hot or cold). The large and crispy onion rings could easily feed a family of 8. They also have pizza, salads and chicken for people (e.g. kids) that aren't fans of fish. Finally, there is a raw bar with clams, oysters, peel and eat shrimp and stuffed clams. I never have room for dessert, but if you do, there is ice cream available, too. There is also a great miniature golf place outside. The lines can get long, so order on the phone and then you can still eat under their canopies. Most importantly-bring cash or a check, though there is an ATM inside, as they don't take credit cards.

Catch of the Day, Wellfleet-don’t skip this unassuming place. The fish is fresh and the dishes are well done. You can take out (prepared dishes or from the fish market), sit inside or outside.

PJ’s Seafood, Wellfleet-We have gone here for years and it is always good. As a child I enjoyed their Portuguese Kale soup. It is a great place for kids as you order and then can sit on patios or inside. Very casual. They also have soft-serve with sticky toppings for dessert.

Maurice’s Market Deli, Wellfleet-This is a convenience store with the best of deals-a huge lobster roll full of tail and clam meat chunks for $8.95. It is across from the South Wellfleet Drive-In and next to Maurice’s Campground.

A Nice Cream Stop, Wellfleet-in the center of Wellfleet, this place has great Raspberry-lime rickies, as well as Emack and Bolio’s ice cream.

Wicked Oyster and Winslow's Tavern, Wellfleet-both of these restaurants are lovely for a night out. Although they have children's menus, I recommend going without the kids and just enjoying the local and seasonal food and nice atmosphere. Both restaurants also have nice vegetarian options.

Fairways in Eastham-this place has an enormous variety of muffins and donuts, and options at every meal. It is also very child friendly.

The Friendly Fisherman, Eastham. Although we haven't sat down for a meal here, you can buy fresh and delicious fish.

Royal Thai Cuisine, Eastham. It may seem odd to recommend a Thai restaurant when you are on the Cape, but each summer I just hit seafood wall. The owners are lovely people and the food is consistently good. The prices are also reasonable.

Sam's Deli, Eastham. This was a new discovery this year. For those days when you just don't want to cook/deal with dishes/ brave restaurant prices or lines, at Sam's you can get a range of sandwiches, all for around $6.00!

Napi’s in Provincetown-I have always loved their black beans and rice, if only because it is served with a banana fritter. I haven’t been, though, in a few years.

Tofu-A-Go-Go in Provincetown. Again, I haven’t been in a few years, but I still fondly remember their grilled tofu sandwich with peanut sauce, shredded carrots and cabbage and sesame seeds. And I don’t normally like tofu in a sandwich.

Savory and Sweet Escape, Truro. I literally stumbled into this place this year, desperate for an espresso. The "Savory" side, offers pizzas, paninis, French fries, grilled burgers and chicken. The "Sweet" side has more homemade flavors of ice cream than I have ever seen. In between is an espresso bar. You can sit inside, or outside on the patio. Finally, they have free WIFI. We loved being able to sit outside and not worry about the kids being messy. We ordered in advance, which meant that the food was ready when our kids were starving. We also enjoyed both the regular pizza and the margarita with fresh tomatoes and mozzarella. We weren't as thrilled with the price (17.95 for a large Margarita pizza) or that the pizza was a bit well done. However, the absolutely fantastic ice cream and hand cut french fries made up for that. The fries were dark and while a bit soft, we couldn't stop eating them. I had two of my favorite flavors ever: white ginger with crystallized ginger and white chocolate and cranberry bog which was a wonderful tart cranberry ice cream with big chunks of walnuts, dark and white chocolate and dried cranberries.

  1. OOh, nice tip on the lobster roll at Maurice's Deli - will definitely have to check that out!

Wicked Oyster also does a terrific breakfast, and the kids will love the blueberry pancakes. (My fave is the corned beef hash) We have eaten at Daily Catch several times and have always been impressed with the food.

Your posts have made me want to get back down there, but luckily that will be in two weeks.

  2. Dude, thanks for the reminder about cash only at Arnold's. We plan to follow your directions closely by ordering ahead before we head over there tomorrow evening. Last year the raw oysters (I'm big raw oyster fan) were incredible. I've seriously been looking forward to them all year...
